Constipation is a common complaint among a significant portion of the 'healthy' population, particularly the elderly. Other risk groups are pregnant or nursing women, dieters, shift workers, and travellers. The average frequency of bowel movements varies widely - from three bowel movements a day to three a week. What is normal for you may not be normal for someone else. In general, however, you're likely constipated if you pass hard stools less than three times a week. In some cases you may also have a bloated feeling, abdominal cramping or pain. The main factors causing constipation are a low intake of fibre, denied bowel movements, low intake of fluids, age, depression, stress, pregnancy or lack of exercise. The aim of treatment for constipation is to re-establish normal colon function; for long term digestive health. One significant factor in constipation is the amount of water absorbed by the colon from fecal material. Lack of water can make stool hard and clumpy, making it difficult to have bowel movements. Fiberrific is not a laxative. Laxatives trigger your body into having a bowel movement. Over time, they create a condition of dependency which only worsens the problem, because the body forgets how to have a bowel movement on its own. Laxatives can reduce absorption rates of many nutrients including calcium and magnesium as well as cause bowel irritation, inflammation and bleeding. Fiberrific is ideal for treating and preventing constipation Fiberrific's safe, gentle action is the key to its broad range effectiveness. Working with your body to make the colon environment optimal for bowel movements, Fiberrific softens the stool, increasing its weight and hydration, thereby making it easier for your body to have bowel movements without the need for stimulants or irritants. The soluble fibre in Fiberrific reaches the colon intact; where it is fermented by the friendly colonic microflora. This fermentation results in growth of the friendly microflora along with an increased concentration of acetic, propionic and butyric acid in the feces. The increased microflora and acids create greater bulk within the colon. Increased bulk stimulates passage through the colon, reducing transit time. Less transit time results in water re-absorption. Together these factors result in increased stool weight and softer stool; both of which contribute to easier bowel movements and reduced incidence of constipation.
