Stability
Due to the inherent fragility of omega-3s, they are extremely sensitive to damage from heat, light and oxygen. If left alone all omega-3s will spoil and go rancid quickly so that virtually all products have to contain other ingredients. The vast majority of products on the market contain both natural and artificial ingredients (fillers, excipients, sweeteners, stabilizers, flavours, colours, scents, thickeners, dilutants, adulterants, etc.)
The problems that arise from many of these additives are as follows:
- They can reduce the bioavailability of the omega-3s.
- They can interact with the omega-3s.
- They can be allergens or irritants.
Powders
The newest format for omega-3 supplementation is powder. Up until about 2 years ago, it was impossible to get a stable omega-3 in powdered form. At that time, it was discovered that you could microencapsulate omega-3s, which enables them to be stable against heat, light and oxygen. This natural process of microencapsulation has a couple of pleasant secondary side effects. It dramatically reduces, and in fact virtually eliminates, the fish smell and taste, and also completely eliminates repeating (the fish burps).
